My good friend Jack Daly was down under last week presenting his material to sold out audiences.
One of the big take-aways for me was his fact that sports teams are better organised than most businesses.
And I’m not talking professional sports teams here.
I’m thinking most park sports teams.
Sports teams have a coach.
The coach sets the agenda for the team.
He has a plan for the year, broken down into months and weeks.
The coach organises the weekly events, including training, drills, mindsets and also he makes the plans.
The coach keeps the team members accountable for their activities and ensures those activities get done.
Because of the coach, everybody is clear on the roles they need to play.
All sporting teams take time out from their game day to practice their skills and their fitnesses so that they perform optimally on game day.
Sporting teams that do not practice always fall short on game day.
A true sporting team cannot go from game day to game day without practice sessions between games.
Sporting teams have a playbook.
Sporting teams know their strengths and their weaknesses.
And they organise their processes to maximise those strengths and avoid any vulnerabilities on their weaknesses.
And they work on strengthening their weaknesses.
Most businesses do not have a playbook that covers all aspects of the business.
And if they do have a playbook, most times the playbook is rarely referred to and is a static document from a long time ago.
The answer is simple.
If you want to run a successful business, organise your processes, practice those processes, and seek professional help with the team organisation.
That is what successful businesses do.
